Over the last couple of months, I have covered the magnificent comeback of Maya J’an a couple of times. I first came across Maya J’an(formerly known as Maya B) several years ago, and she quickly became one of my favorite rising Pop and R&B artists. I first started writing Maya J’an shortly after the release of her singles ‘Selenas’ and ‘Getty Woah’ at the end of the 2010s. Around this time, she had a couple of more enthralling singles drop, such as ‘Dollar to a Diamond’ and ‘Sink’ with SAINt JHN. ‘Sink’ was probably the biggest song she released at that point, as it became a bit of a TikTok hit. I have always admired her experimental, unique approach to R&B and Pop music. She fused Hip Hop with Electronic elements, setting her apart. Her vocals were also excellent, and her songwriting was relatable. After she originally popped off around 2020, though, Maya J’an shifted her focus to songwriting for others. For the last few years, Maya J’an has been in the background, helping others create their music. In January, though, Maya J’an decided to start releasing new music again, starting with the single ‘cul-de-sac.’ She followed up this awesome track with the song ‘pocket knife,’ which came out about a month later. Both of these songs are very enjoyable, and both are still in rotation for me. They follow a somewhat similar dreamy Pop/R&B sound, but they both stand out in their own right. A couple of weeks ago, Maya J’an released another single, ‘new june.’ She also announced that she is releasing an EP called blind faith county in mid-May. Below, I wanted to give some thoughts on Maya J’an’s ‘new june.’ Please let me know in the comments what you think of Maya J’an and ‘new june,’ and also comment the names of any other up and coming artists you think I should listen to!

As I mentioned above, although Maya J’an’s recent singles have similarities, they definitely stand out from each other. ‘new june’ is another track that shines differently from the other two singles Maya J’an has released this year. I would not expect to feel this way about a song of hers based on what I have heard from Maya J’an in the past, but the first artist I thought of as a comparison for this song when I first heard it is actually Taylor Swift. There is something about the sweet and whimsical Pop nature of this song that just makes me think of some of her best love songs from the past. The instrumental for ‘new june’ is very whimsical and feathery. The melody is driven by a bright piano riff with a bit of a funk element to it. The piano riff is complemented by synths that come in and out which give it a very full sound, especially on the hook. There are some super nice backing vocals from Maya J’an which add to the fullness of the melody. The beat for this track is slow yet deliberate, making the song feel soft yet deliberate. As always, Maya J’an’s vocals on this one are excellent. Her high pitch and light tone make the song feel warm and airy. On ‘new june,’ Maya J’an sings of a brief or fleeting connection with someone she really admired. Although the timing may not have been right, Maya feels like she and this person are meant for each other. She thinks of their moments together a lot, and is trying to use the energy of the world to bring them together. It is a very sweet sentiment. ‘new june’ is yet another beautiful track from Maya J’an with a message that I am sure a lot of people can relate to.
