Genia is a rising R&B star who definitely deserves more love than she has gotten. She has had a couple of viral moments over the years that have helped her gain traction online, but not to the level that she deserves. Genia is relatively new to posting original music, with her first single, ‘Introducing’ having come out in 2023(this original single is what introduced me to Genia on TikTok). Over the next two years, Genia released two excellent EPs, 4PM IN THE VILLE and 4AM IN THE VILLE. Both of these EPs demonstrated Genia’s wide range as an artist sonically, vocally, and lyrically. In 2025, Genia released a couple of singles, which also expanded on her range as an artist. One thing I have come to love about Genia is how varied her sound is. She definitely draws inspiration from several different artists. Some songs have an Electronic Pop tint to them, while others are more classic R&B. Genia has put out two singles so far in 2026, ‘Downfall’ and ‘BABY IMA STAR.’ These two songs really show Genia’s range. Below, I wanted to briefly chat about these tracks. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about Genia and her new singles!
DOWNFALL
‘Downfall’ is a slow and laid-back song with a very dainty instrumental. There is something about this instrumental that makes me think of older Jhene Aiko music. The melody is so atmospheric. It is driven by an angelic piano riff, and it is complemented by some floaty synths that give it depth. There is also a guitar riff that comes in and out. ‘Downfall’ has no beat, so the whole focus is on the melody and vocals. Even though the instrumental is light, Genia gives a ton of emphasis to the track with her vocals. Genia really demonstrates her range on ‘Downfall.’ She hits some nice high notes and does so with such power that it gives the song such an emotional feeling. On ‘Downfall,’ Genia sings about a toxic relationship and yearning for someone who does not reciprocate her energy.
BABY IMA STAR
We really got the duality of Genia’s energy with these two tracks, as ‘BABY IMA STAR’ has a more high-key sound. This is a groovy R&B track with a bit of a Y2K feeling to the instrumental. I know that Genia has been working with Timbaland recently, and this track definitely feels produced by or inspired by his production style. The melody for this track is pretty murky, but also shimmery. The synths that drive this one are dark, but there are glistening sound effects to bring it up. Like the melody, the beat has a funky feeling to it. I really like how the bass bangs, as it gives the song so much life. Genia’s vocals on ‘BABY IMA STAR’ are a lot more subdued when compared to ‘Downfall,’ which is kind of ironic considering the energy of each song. Genia still sounds very smooth on this instrumental though. ‘BABY IMA STAR’ is a self-love anthem where Genia asserts how talented she is and how much potential she has.
