LEXIE LIU – TEENAGE RAMBLE REVIEW

If you know me or have followed this blog for a while, you would know I love finding random Pop artists from around the world that Americans are typically not exposed to. In the United States, we sometimes seem to stay in our own bubble when it comes to media, not realizing there is so much great music and art to appreciate from places we know little about. Lexie Liu is a Pop artist I came across a couple of years ago who totally fits into this category. Lexie Liu is a Chinese Pop star who has been making music for quite a while. Most of her music is actually in English, which makes it palatable for a worldwide audience (although she also sings in Mandarin, Spanish, and a couple of other languages in some songs). Lexie Liu first started dropping music back in 2018, and she has steadily been on the rise since. She dropped two EPs in 2019 titled 2030 and Meta Ego, as well as another EP titled Gone Gold in 2021. These projects all helped her get her name out there as a flourishing Pop star, but Lexie Liu really started to make a name for herself in 2022 with the release of her album Happy Star. This was actually one of my favorite Pop releases of that year, and it turned me into a fan of Lexie Liu(if you want to, you can look up my review of Happy Star below after you are done reading this one). Happy Star had such a unique sonic theme, and it really stood out for its futuristic and individualistic sound. Over the next couple of years, Lexie Liu dropped some singles but was relatively quiet with her output compared to the past. Lexie Liu finally dropped a new project a couple of months ago, though, titled Teenage Ramble. Below, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite songs from Teenage Ramble, then give some overall thoughts on the project to close things out. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about Lexie Liu and Teenage Ramble, and also comment the names of any other artists you think I should check out!

FFFFF

One thing I have always loved about Lexie Liu’s music is that a lot of it seems so inspired by early 2000s EuroPop music. ‘FFFFF,’ which was one of the singles released from this project(having dropped back in May), is a song that embodies this idea so well. There is something about the melody for this track that feels creepy in the best way. The synths that drive this one have a melancholy yet whimsical feeling to them. The melody is driven by a groovy and somber bassline, and it is complemented by bright synths that come in and out. ‘FFFFF’ has a fast-paced beat that falls right into that aforementioned Europop sound I love. Lexie Liu shows off her vocal range nicely on ‘FFFFF,.’ I especially like it when she hits the high notes, as it gives this song so much life. On, ‘FFFFF,’ Lexie Liu sings about her infatuation with her new lover, stating that they are the only person she can think about.

DEEPER AND DEEPER

I love it when an artist throws a song on a project that is kind of outside the box from what would be expected. ‘Deeper and Deeper’ totally fits that idea. This song veers away from the sparkly Pop sound of the rest of this EP. Instead, it has a cold and brisk Electronic music sound. ‘Deeper and Deeper’ is mainly defined by its underground House tendencies. Everything bout this one, from the melody to the beat(and even the vocals), feels inspired by underground House music you would hear at a club in Germany. The instrumental for this one is so sleek and metallic, yet it is still fun and inviting somehow. ‘Deeper and Deeper’ has what is probably the most subdued vocal performance of the project from Lexie Liu, but it is also one of the most interesting. The way she sings-raps on this track really makes it stand out and pop. On ‘Deeper and Deeper, Lexie Liu sings about

X

Although ‘X’ was not one of the singles from this project, it has actually emerged as the most popular song of the EP since it came out. It is easy to see why this song has become so popular, as it has such an addictive energy to it. ‘X’ is another track that immediately makes me think of Y2K Pop music when I hear it. It has the sassiness of music by artists like Britney Spears, but the sheen of Europop music. The synths that drive this one are bright and metallic. During the hook, the melody is huge, but during the verses, it is more subdued. The beat has a classic Dance Pop sound with some glitchy elements that make it stand out. I love Lexie Liu’s vocals on this one. Her tone is so fresh and clear, and really shows off her range. Her vocals help give this song a massive feeling which is so fun. On ‘X,’ Lexie Liu asserts her confidence and tells her ex that she will not be theirs anymore.

POP GIRL

‘Pop Girl’ was the first single released in anticipation of this EP, having come out last March. At that time, I did not know Lexie Liu was coming out with a new project, and I assumed it was a one-off single. ‘Pop Girl’ was easily one of my favorite songs from the first half of 2025, and it was constantly in my rotation. Everything about this track is so fun and so massive. ‘Pop Girl’ has a sound that immediately makes me think of 1990s glitchy Vogue Electronic music. This track is definitely something that should be played at a fashion show. The melody has a very sheeny and metallic feeling; it sounds like something out of some utopian movie about aliens or robots. I love how glitchy the beat is, as it adds to that robotic feeling of the track. Lexie Liu raps on ‘Pop Girl,’ showing off a different side to her vocals that contrasts a lot with the rest of the project. The way she raps gives this song so much attitude, which fits the instrumental so well. On ‘Pop Girl,’ Lexie Liu raps about all of the things that make her an iconic Pop star(such as her hair, skin, and walk).

Lexie Liu has always had a sound and overall presence that really stands out from her peers. She makes super individualistic pop music, drawing from a wide range of influences yet always sounding so innovative. Teenage Ramble has so many examples of this. It is really unique compared to the other Pop music I was hearing throughout 2025. I love how Lexie Liu’s music has retro tendencies but also feels so modern. It is very obvious that she is inspired by the music of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Pretty much every track on this EP has something about it that is reminiscent and turn of turn-of-the-century Pop and Electronic music. From EuroPop to Y2K Pop to House music and even Pop-Rock, this EP feels so inspired by that era. The positive and frantic energy that this project has is palpable. Every song injects me with life and makes me want to dance. One of the best things about this EP is how diverse its sound is. Every track sounds very different from the last, yet they still flow together so well. Lexie Liu has always been a vocalist with a very distinctive sound and presence, and I feel like she showed she is still improving in that regard with Teenage Ramble. The amount of the different vocal styles on this project is impressive. She demonstrates he wide vocal range on some songs, while showing restraint on others. She even raps well on a few tracks, showing another different side to her artistry. Lyrically, this project exudes so much confidence. It is awesome how Lexie Liu shows herself such admiration on every track and states she will get what(or who she wants). Her attitude is palpable. Overall, Teenage Ramble is one of the best Pop releases I heard in 2025. This project is a gem, and Lexie deserves so much hype for it. Lexie Liu once again proves how important she is with Teenage Ramble
