As hot as the Milwaukee music scene is right now, there are so many underground artists in the city that I believe deserve so much more love. There are a few artists in particular that people would associate with Milwaukee, for sure, but the city really is brimming with so many talented artists. One of my favorite up-and-coming stars from Milwaukee, whom I am very excited to hear more from, is Simi. Relative to a lot of her peers, Simi is relatively new to the Hip Hop game. Simi initially gained traction in the city from doing open mics and other various shows put on throughout Milwaukee, gaining traction for her bars, stage presence, and overall unique vibe when it came to some of the other artists in the city. Simi has not put out a ton of solo music to this point, though, having dropped her first mixtape in 2024, titled Simi Automatic. This was actually not only one of my favorite Milwaukee projects of 2024, but one of my favorite mixtapes in general. Simi just has a sound and a style that sticks out. She does a good job at staying adjacent with the sound and style of music that has popped off in Milwaukee recently, while standing out with her delivery and vocal style. After a long wait, Simi has finally returned with a new single titled ‘Push It,’ which I wanted to talk about briefly below. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about Simi and her new song ‘Push It,’ and also comment the names of any other rising artists you think I should check out!
If you are a fan of retro Hip Hop music, you should immediately recognize and dig the sample on this track. ‘Push It’ is a fun take on a classic track. The sample that drives this one comes from the iconic Salt-N-Pepa song of the same name. The melody for Simi’s ‘Push It’ has a somewhat similar tone to the original track, but it is way brighter and more saturated. There is something about this melody that makes me think of 1990s EuroDance music, which I dig a lot. The beat for ‘Push It’ has a similar tempo to the original, but has a Milwaukee Slap music twist to it. As good as the instrumental is, Simi’s rap performance is what really makes this song great. Her flow, tone, and overall attitude are so enticing and make ‘Push It’ so fun to listen to. I love the confidence she raps with, and the sassiness in her delivery. Simi really asserts herself on ‘Push It,’ which makes it such a fun song. ‘Push It’ has the kind of sound and energy that makes it feel like a dance floor anthem. This is the kind of song that will get any function jumping.
