Over the last couple of years, the Milwaukee Hip Hop scene has totally popped off. Artists like J.P., Chicken P, 414bigfrank, and AyooLii have taken the world by storm recently. Their zany, outside-the-box Slap music sound has been seen as a breath of fresh air in Hip Hop, and it shows that Milwaukee has its own little style and ambiance that stands out among the genre and culture. As well as the artists mentioned above have been doing, arguably no one from Milwaukee has had a bigger impact than Myaap. She first started to pop off in 2022 when her track ‘Party Crackin’ and where her ‘Paint The Town Red’ remix went viral, and she has been absolutely skyrocketing since. Myaap has been working tirelessly and has been putting out so much music over the last couple of years. After her massive blowup in 2022, she grinded super hard in 2023. Last year, Myaap put out 12 stand-alone singles, including ‘WHAM!’ with Lilrb, which may be her biggest track to date. She also put out one EP titled No Guarantee Vol. 1 near the beginning of 2023, and dropped her debut album, Worth The Wait, later in the year during July. Myaap has continued to stay prolific with her output in 2024, keeping her foot on the gas and taking advantage of her moment. Myaap dropped her second album, BIG MYAAP, NOT THE LIL ONE, back in January. This is one of my personal favorite projects of the year, as it contains great tracks like ‘I Ain’t Hidin’ with MG Sleepy and ‘Too Easy.’ After dropping a single called ‘Actin Up’ with Chicken P, Myaap released her second EP, a joint project with legendary Hip Hop producer Nedarb called YOP! Since putting out this very good project, Myaap has dropped several more singles. Below, I wanted to briefly highlight her last three tracks, ‘Crunch Time,’ Wrist Buss,’ and ‘Dripping,’ as they are all great examples of why you need to be paying attention to her if you are not already. Please let me know in the comments below how you feel about these new singles from Myaap, and also comment the names of any other Independent or Milwaukee-based artists you think I should check out next!
‘Crunch Time,’ which came out back on August 6, has a lighter sound than what I would expect to hear from Myaap. This track does have a hard-hitting, bassy heavy beat with a Slap music tempo, but it is a bit slower, more relaxed, and melody than a lot of her other music. The melody for ‘Crunch Time’ has a pretty bright tone. This melody is driven by a charming guitar riff that is complemented by some synths that come in and out. Myaap’s vocal performance on ‘Crunch Time’ is great. She raps with ferocity in the verse that gives the track a bit of grit, and the way she sings the hook leans into the sweet feeling of the melody. ‘Crunch Time’ may be a brief track at 1:18, but it packs a punch and shows a bit of variance to Myaap’s vocal style. ‘Wrist Buss,’ which was out about a month ago on September 6, has a tempo and overall sound that is closer to what I would probably expect to hear from Myaap. This song is driven by a futuristic and quirky melody that sounds like it came out of a different dimension. It does have a pretty vibrant and pleasant tone, but it is highly saturated and very strong sounding, which makes it take on an almost grating feeling. The beat for ‘Wrist Buss’ is rapid-fire and super tough. This is the kind of beat that makes me want to get up and dance when I hear it. Myaap more than matches the energy of the instrumental with her rap performance. The harsh and larger-than-life way she raps the verses gives the track so much emphasis, and how she sings the chorus fits well with the intensity of the track as well. ‘Wrist Buss’ is a high-key Slap music banger where Myaap is back in her element for sure. Myaap’s latest release, ‘Dripping,’ which features 414Jungle Baby, came out about a week ago on September 27. This track departs from the Slap music that one may expect to hear from Myaap. Instead, she opts for a more Southern R&B Trap sound on this track. ‘Dripping’ makes me think of some of the R&B Trap music that DJ Luke Nasty was making popular in the late 2010s. The melody for ‘Dripping’ is driven by a funky, dark bassline that is complemented by shimmering yet still melancholy synths. The intricacy of the synths that complement this bassline gives the melody so much texture and life. ‘Dripping’ has an upbeat Pop-Trap beat that will get any dance floor jumping when it comes on. This rapid-fire and tough beat makes the song feel huge and anthemic. Both Myaap and 414Jungle Baby absolutely kill it on this track. Both rappers spit with a larger-than-life demeanor and aggressive flow that makes the track super vibrant. I especially enjoy the way 414Jungle Baby’s higher pitch contrasts the raspiness that Myaap is rapping with, as this juxtaposition brings balance to the track. ‘Dripping’ is a smooth and entertaining Pop-Trap banger that I will be adding to all of my party playlists. With these last three releases and with everything else Myaap has put on in 2024, she is still proving why she is one the most important rising rappers in the game today, not only in Milwaukee but in the whole Hip Hop world. Myaap is on an upward trajectory that seemingly can not be stopped, and I am so excited to see her continue to thrive.
