If you are someone who is in tune with the Milwaukee music scene at all, I would assume you have heard of Chicken P. Formerly known as Lil Chicken, he was one of the catalysts for this new wave of Milwaukee Slap music that has been taking over the nation for the last couple of years. Artists like Myaap, J.P., and 414bigfrank would not be who they are if it were not for Chicken P. Not only did he help create and curate this style of music that is becoming bigger and bigger by the week, but he is one of the artists who helped put eyes on the Milwaukee Hip Hop scene several years ago and proved that there are artists here that the world needs to know. Chicken P has been prevalent in the Milwaukee music scene for a long time(his first releases go back to the early 2010s), but he has seen a surge in popularity over the last couple of years. His BussaBrick album series, which started in 2022, has catapulted his career recently, with people particularly gravitating towards BussaBrick Vol. 3. Songs like ‘Rollin,’ People’s Favorite,’ and ‘Mode Again’ have popped off from that project over the last year or so, once again asserting Chicken P as a king of the rap game in Milwaukee. Chicken P recently released a new album called Hardest N****a Livin’, which is receiving a deluxe version on June 14(I will certainly be covering this deluxe version of that album when it comes out). Chicken P’s new single, ‘Low Life Rich N****a,’ is the lead single from this deluxe project. I wanted to briefly highlight ‘Low Life Rich N****a’ below, as it is yet another example of why Chicken P is so special. Please let me know in the comments what you think of this new track from Chicken P, and also comment the names of any other rising Hip Hop artists you think I should check out!
‘Low Life Rich N****a’ is a song for anyone who is a fan of bold and harsh Trap music. I will say if you are into lighter and more Poppy Hip Hop, this song is probably not for you. ‘Low Life Rich N****a’ is truly a song for the streets. Everything about this track is harsh, mean, and huge. The melody for this track is so dark and foreboding. It is actually very intricate; this melody is driven by a very low and melancholy keyboard riff that almost sounds like an organ, and it is complemented by various synths and sounds that make it feel so massive. I really like the bells that are a part of this melody, as they go well with the organ-esque sound of the keyboard riff and add to this song’s incredibly menacing sound. As one would expect, the beat for ‘Low Life Rich N****a’ is commanding. The bass on this track totally pounds and the pacing of the rest of the drums gives the song an anxious feeling that adds to its threatening sound. Chicken P’s rap performance on this track certainly matches and even adds to the intensity of the instrumental. Everything about his rapping on ‘Low Life Rich N****a’ is great. His dynamic flow makes the song feel so fresh, and the raspy tone that he raps with pairs so nicely with this daunting instrumental. ‘Low Life Rich N****a’ is an absolute banger that embodies everything about Chicken P and his sound that makes it great. This track certainly makes me excited for the upcoming deluxe version of Hardest N****a Livin’.
