Although the Milwaukee music scene is mainly known for a specific style of Hip Hop music these days, there are so many great artists here that go against this grain. Milwaukee is a city that is as diverse musically as anywhere, even if it is mainly thought of for its Iconic Slap music sound. One artist with a sound that is super cool and nothing like typical Milwaukee Hip Hop music is Micah Emrich. He makes a super unique style of music that is honestly hard to pinpoint. His Alternative sound has elements of Folk, Pop, Indie Rock, and Hip Hop; he fuses multiple genres together to make a fresh sound that is entirely his own. Micah Emrich has been making music for a long time, and he has truly started to come into his own over the last few years or so. In 2021, Micah Emrich released his EP Closure. The title track of this EP helped put Micah Emrich on the map, getting him noticed by Independent Alternative music fans all around the country. He followed up this excellent EP with an album called BASEMENT. In 2022, Micah Emrich put out another very good EP, titled COMPLACENT. Micah Emrich stayed prolific with his output in 2023, having put out two EPs, SAMPLE-RETURN MISSION and a joint project with Duwayne called Du What You Mike. In addition to these projects, Micah Emrich dropped two more singles with Duwayne to close out 2023. Micah Emrich has stayed busy in 2024, having released three singles so far this year. I wanted to briefly highlight Micah Emrich’s two latest singles, ‘maybe hell in a better place?’ and ‘Secrets’ below. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about these two new tracks from Micah Emrich, and also comment the names of any other Indie Alternative artists you think I should check out!
‘maybe hell is a better place?’ is Micah Emrich’s second single of 2024, having come out back on March 1st(his first single of the year, ‘My Process,’ came out back in January. I am not going to highlight that one here, but if you like these two tracks definitely go check it out because you will like it as well). ‘maybe hell is a better place?’ is a soothing Folk-Rock track with a bit of a Country tint to it. This song is so easy-going and charming. It is the perfect sort of track to listen to as I sit on my porch on this beautiful May Saturday. The guitar riff that drives the melody for this one is warm and delightful; this is the kind of melody that will put anyone in a good mood when they hear it. Towards the end of the track, the melody gets very atmospheric and a bit heavy, giving the song an all-encompassing feeling. The beat for ‘maybe hell is a better place?’ is very cool. Throughout the track, it switches tempos, at times having a light and upbeat sound and at other times having a more weighty and deliberate sound. This beat keeps me on my toes as a listener and helps make this track captivating. As cool as the instrumental is, the best thing about ‘maybe hell is a better place?’ is the vocals. Micah Emrich really kills it on this one. I love his full and luscious tone on this track. It truly makes the warmth of the song resonate. ‘maybe hell is a better place?’ may have a melancholy lyrical tone, but the feeling the song gives me is so bright. Micah Emrich’s latest single, ‘Secrets,’ came out about a month ago on April 19. Like the last track, this one has a very relaxing feeling to it. Although the melody is very sunny and has such a smooth feeling to it. This guitar-driven is simple yet also intricate; it has a sound that draws me in so much. The beat for ‘Secrets’ has a bit of a Hip Hop tempo that I dig. This song almost feels like a combination of Soft Rock and Trap. The way that the bass pounds on this one is super interesting. The emphasis of the beat sort of contrasts the calmness of the melody, creating a cool juxtaposition. Micah Emrich’s vocal performance on this one almost feels like a fusion of Soft Rock and Hip Hop as well. His flow rides this Trap beat very nicely. I would not exactly say he is rapping, but it has a bit of a rap feeling. The tone that Micah Emrich has a ton of life in it; the emotion that he is experiencing on this one is palpable. ‘Secrets’ is the perfect song to play at a kickback, as it has enough energy to get the party going but also has a very alleviating element to it. Both of these new singles from Micah Emrich are super cool and can appeal to a wide range of music listeners. His sound is so individual to him, and that is what makes it so special.
