As you have probably noticed if you have been following this blog for the last year or so, I am a big fan of 2hi’s music. I mean, I literally wrote about some of his new music last week(please go check out that write-up if you have not yet). I feel like out of all the great artists in Milwaukee making music right now, he stands out so much. 2hi has a style and energy with his music that is just so unique and captivating; there is just no one in the city like him, and he is as eclectic and unique as any Hip Hop artist coming up right now. Throughout the 2020s, 2hi has been very prolific with his output and has been steadily growing as an underground artist. He first started gaining recognition in 2020 and 2021, when he dropped his albums 2 Birds and White Lighter, Bad Luck. He followed these two riveting projects up with his 2022 EP HEY GANG!,. This EP further cemented 2hi as an artist who needs to be watched and continued his momentum as not only one of the most exciting artists in Milwaukee but also in the underground/Indie Hip Hop world in general. 2hi was super prolific with his output in 2023. He started out the year with multiple very entertaining singles, many of which I reviewed on this blog. In the summer of 2023, he put out an album called Who Cared Who Started It? It’s Music!. He followed this album up with two more projects to close out the year, a collaborative EP with iBn Farmacia called BIG FARMA and a mini album called OUCH!. All three of these projects are extremely fun and high quality, and they really set 2hi apart from his peers(I reviewed all three of these releases, so please go read my reviews of them after this if you have not done so yet). After beginning 2024 quietly, 2hi is back and better than ever. He recently dropped a new single called ‘I’M HIGH RIGHT NOW / AWAY’ on 4/20(this is the single that I reviewed last week). Yesterday, he just dropped his second single of the year, ‘GODZILLA.’ 2hi has stated that ‘GODZILLA’ is a bit of a deviation in sound from what one may expect from him, which is thrilling because he has such massive range and potential. To say this track is a departure from the music that I have become accustomed to hearing from 2hi is an understatement. ‘GODZILLA’ is nothing like anything I have heard from him to this point. In fact, this song is not even Hip Hop. ‘GODZILLA’ has an upbeat Electronic music sound that makes me want to party when I hear it. I am literally having a tough time sitting here and typing this as I listen to this track because I want to get up and dance around my apartment instead. ‘GODZILLA’ leans into a trend that has been creeping into popularity recently in Electronic music. This song definitely feels inspired by the Jersey Club music movement that has been exponentially growing and thriving of late. The beat of this song is so infectious and stimulating; it will get anyone moving who hears it. There is a bit of a quirkiness to this beat that makes it stand out from the music people would expect from this sound. The way some of the drums are arranged on this track has a bit of Milwaukee Slap music element that makes it stand out. ‘GODZILLA’ almost feels like a Milwaukee twist on the Jersey Club sound. The melody for ‘GODZILLA’ is inviting and jarring at the same time. This melody, which is driven by super-saturated synths, has a bright and pleasant sound but also has a bit of an undertone that makes it feel dark and gritty. As interesting as this instrumental is, the coolest thing about ‘GODZILLA’ is 2hi’s vocal performance. There is a heavy amount of autotune on 2hi’s vocals in this track, making his voice sound robotic and futuristic. The way his vocals are mixed adds to the exhilarating feeling that this song has. 2hi sing-raps with a variety of flows on this track; his delivery varies in intensity as the song progresses, which really keeps me on my toes as a listener. I think that this new sound from 2hi has a ton of potential. It is easy to hear that he is certainly onto something special with ‘GODZILLA.’ I am very interested to see if he continues to go down this route. Regardless of whether he does or not, I know that ‘GODZILLA’ is a banger, and I can not wait to hear what direction 2hi goes in with his music next.
