As I have said before, I think the notion that Hip Hop music has become stale and unimaginative from old heads is just straight up not true. Of course, if you only pay attention to cookie-cutter mainstream music, you will always think that music is becoming boring. Typically, the artists who are pushing boundaries and creating their own sound emerge in the underground, and mainstream artists will slowly start to morph and follow their trends as they become viral. AyooLii, POLO PERKS, and FearDorian are three artists who prove that Hip Hop is as diverse and experimental as ever right now. If you are in tune with the Milwaukee Hip Hop scene at all(or even with underground Hip Hop in general), I am sure you know who AyooLii is. He has taken the world by storm over the last couple of years. Along with artists like Myaap, J.P., and 414bigfrank, AyooLii has helped put Milwaukee Slap music on the map; these artists have taken the Milwaukee street sound and have made it a global phenomenon, which is so awesome to see. I love that artists like AyooLii are taking the fun and unorthodox nature of Milwaukee and making it known and loved by the whole country. With songs like ‘Perc 10,’ ‘Same,’ and ‘Jungle,’ AyooLii has put himself on the map in the last couple of years as one of the most exciting artists coming up in Hip Hop. POLO PERKS is a rising Hip Hop artist who is just and individualistic and AyooLii. Born in Harlem and raised in Connecticut, POLO PERKS has a sound and style that is entirely his own. POLO PERKS incorporates various forms of Punk Rock into Hip Hop music in a way that is unlike any of his peers. His unorthodox approach to this kind of Hip Hop music makes him stand out and has helped him become a super interesting rising artist. Songs like ‘snowpatrol’ and ‘Who Killed Kenny’ put him on the map in the early 2020s, and he has been steadily on the rise since as an underground star. FearDorian is an Atlanta-based rapper and producer who has always had his finger on the pulse of what is wacky and cool in Hip Hop. He has collaborated with both AyooLii and POLO PERKS in the past and contributed to their super riveting styles of music. FearDorian is so great at taking the best elements of the most thrilling new styles and Hip Hop and making those kinds of Hip Hop shine. Recently, these three super distinctive artists came together for a very entertaining track called ‘Ricky Eats Acid,’ which I wanted to briefly highlight below. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about this new track from AyooLii, POLO PERKS, and FearDorian, and also comment the names of any other underground or indie artists you think I should check out!
‘Ricky Eats Acid’ is a song that truly embodies all of the eccentric traits that each of these artists is known for with their music. This song has a melody that is reminiscent of the Pop-Punk-infused Hip Hop that POLO PERKS loves making, but the beat has the sort of upbeat Milwaukee Slap sound that AyooLii is known for. The melody for ‘Ricky Eats Acid’ is sweet and harsh at the same time. Although the tone of the guitar riff that drives this melody is very sunny and sweet, there is something about the way it is mixed that makes it abrasive and mean. As I said, the beat for this track is rapid, intense, and vivacious. The bass on this beat absolutely pounds, and the fast pace of the drums will make anyone want to dance when they hear it. I really like how AyooLii and POLO PERKS’ vocal performances contrast on this track. The gritty and low tone that AyooLii raps with gives the song a layer of toughness, and the higher and brighter pitch that POLO PERKS is singing with makes the song so lively and entertaining. Overall, ‘Ricky Eats Acid’ is an eccentric, thrilling, and vivacious track that shows how talented all three of these artists are. It always shows how great their chemistry is when they come together to make a banger like this. I hope that we get more collaborations between AyooLii, POLO PERKS, and FearDorian in the future because they struck gold with ‘Ricky Eats Acid.’ Regardless, I am excited to see what each of them do next, as they are proof that the Hip Hop game is as dynamic as ever.
