As I stated in my post about J.P. and 414bigfrank’s new track, the Milwaukee Hip Hop scene is as popular and prominent as ever right now. Milwaukee’s Hip Hop scene has been growing so quickly, and it feels like the general Hip Hop world is finally starting to give Milwaukee its flowers. myaap has been a big reason for that. Over the last couple of years, she has become a rising force in Rap, with fans around the country being attracted to her unique and zestful sound. Songs like 2022’s ‘Wham’ and 2023’s ‘Party Crackin’ did numbers on TikTok and Instagram, asserting myaap as an artist that needs to be paid attention to. Her 2023 album Worth The Wait was even considered a top project of the year by multiple big music publications. myaap has stayed busy in 2024, as she has also released an excellent mixtape this year called BIG MYAAP, NOT THE LIL ONE(go check out my review of that project after reading this if you have not yet). myaap just decided to collaborate with a Milwaukee Hip Hop legend who put the city on the map in the underground a while ago. Chicken P is an artist who has been a leader in the Milwaukee Rap scene for many years; he definitely helped get the ball rolling and is one of the reasons this scene is what it is today. Chicken P first burst into the spotlight in the mid-2010s under the name Lil Chicken. His unique sound captivated fans across the nation and planted the seeds to make Milwaukee’s Hip Hop scene something to be reckoned with. Over the years as Milwaukee’s Rap scene has grown, Chicken P has stayed consistent, continuing to put out individualistic music that draws anyone in who likes rowdy and intense Rap music. Below, I wanted to talk about myaap and Chicken P’s new track ‘Actin Up,’ as it captures every element of what makes these two artists so fun to listen to. ‘Actin Up’ is the kind of song that will get anyone moving the second it turns on. As I sit here typing this up, I literally almost got up and started dancing around my apartment. This song oozes infectious energy. It has a sound and ambiance that is so massive and entertaining; this is the kind of track that puts me in a good mood as soon as it comes on because it is just so exciting. The melody for ‘Actin Up’ is dark and gritty. This melody is driven by highly saturated synths with a mean and murky tone that gives me a stank face when I hear it. The melody is put on top of a raucous, fast-paced beat with a huge bassline that will rattle your speakers. The beat for this track is so harsh and fierce. Like I said earlier, it is so lively that it is tough to not stand up and jump around as I listen to this track. Both myaap and Chicken P sound great on this track. myaap brings a level of ferocity to the track that makes the already huge track feel even bigger, and Chicken P’s more laid-back approach provides a bit of a buffer from the fiery performance of myaap. I really like how Chicken P’s low and gruff tone contrasts the higher pitch that myaap raps with, as this gives the song texture. In short, ‘Actin Up’ is an absolute banger;  it is among my favorite tracks of the year so far. This was an excellent collaboration from two of Milwaukee’s most interesting Hip Hop artists. I am excited to see what both myaap and Chicken P continue to do in 2024 because they can take their careers to the next level, which will help cement Milwaukee as one of the top Hip Hop hubs in the country right now.
