As I stated yesterday in my post about Wynter Bates, Milwaukee is a city with as diverse a music scene as anywhere. People may expect to hear a certain kind of hardcore Hip Hop from someone who claims Milwaukee as their home, but the city is home to many artists who make great music which is nothing like the typical Milwaukee Drill sound. *aya is a rising R&B artist from Milwaukee with a sound that distinguishes them from anyone else making music in this city right now. *aya has an eclectic sound; their sound ranges from Alternative R&B to Indie Pop to Neo-Soul. They have a wide range of influences, drawing inspiration from so many classic and current artists. *aya has not been putting out music for long, having just started putting music online last year. They have been working hard since first debuting at the beginning of 2023. Since dropping their debut single near the beginning of last year, they have put out multiple stand-alone singles and two albums, titled time & metaphors and SWEET SONDER. *aya had a good amount of success with these releases in 2023, putting them on the map as one of the most interesting new artists in Milwaukee. *aya is ready to capitalize on their success in 2023 with a new single to start this year, which is titled ‘everything is under control.’ Below, I wanted to talk about this new single from *aya, as it is a great example of why they are so special. ‘everything is under control’ is such an aptly titled song, as it is as soothing and sweet as anything I have heard in a while. This is a song that has an old-school element to it but also feels modern. There are elements to the track that make me think of so many eras of music. It makes me think of 1950s and 1960s Acoustic Pop music by The Righteous Brothers, late 1990s Neo-Soul by Erykah Badu, and modern Alt-R&B by SZA. The song is driven by a warm and soft Bassline that is complemented by slightly distorted synths that give the song such a cozy and full feeling. This melody is put on top of a light and calm beat that fits the laid-back nature of the melody perfectly. *aya’s vocals on ‘everything is under control’ are excellent. Their deep and eloquent tone makes this song feel so all-encompassing. *aya’s vocal performance on this track could not have been better, and it makes ‘everything is under control’ such a pleasant and lovely song. ‘everything is under control’ is such a great song, and sets the stage for *aya to take their career to the next level in 2024.
