As I have stated so many times on this blog recently, it seems like the Milwaukee Hip Hop scene is thriving today more so than it ever has in the past. It seems like new artists from Milwaukee are popping off every day going viral online, and the artists that were already popping off are gaining more traction nationally by the day. There are quite a few artists who have helped plant the seeds for this scene to shine in the way it is starting to shine who have been grinding for years and definitely deserve more popularity and hype. Someone I wrote about recently who easily fits this mold is Yella Boy Musik. He has been putting in work for years and years in this scene and is thought of within the city as one of the most underrated artists. Yella Boy Musik is a Hip Hop artist who seems to have no boundaries or limits to the kinds of music he can make. His sound and style are so diverse, and if you go through his discography, it feels like he has something for fans of all types of modern Hip Hop. Yella Boy Musik has been very prolific with his output over the last couple of years. In 2022, he released a few singles and an EP called Candles & Love Handles. In 2023, he released a plethora of singles, including ‘Need More,’ ‘Baddie,’ and ‘Eat or Get Ate,’ all of which I wrote about for this blog a couple of months back. In November, Yella Boy Musik dropped two new singles, ‘How You Do That’ and ‘Need More,’ both of which I wanted to highlight in this write-up. Yella Boy Musik’s first single of the month, ‘How You Do That,’ came out on November 1st. This is a light and breezy Melodic Trap banger that has the energy of the Cloud Trap music that became big in the mid to late 2010s. When I hear this track, I think of the music artists like Lil Yachty, Trippie Redd, and DJ Luke Nasty were dropping at the end of the last decade. The melody for this track has a Tropical feeling to it that sort of sounds like it is provided by Steel Drums or some other kind of Caribbean Pan instrument. This melody is put on an intricate Pop-Trap beat with a relaxing element to it that matches the energy of the melody well. Yella Boy Musik’s delivery on this track is lively and charming, enhancing the pleasant nature of the song overall. He rides the beat with his rap flow so well on ‘How You Do That,’ making the track so enjoyable. ‘How You Do That’ is a relaxing Pop-Trap banger that would be perfect to listen to while partying away at the beach on a hot summer day. ‘More Than Friends,’ which came out on November 11, keeps the atmospheric Melodic Trap feeling that the last song had. Instead of reminding me of artists like Lil Yachty or Trippie Redd, though, this track makes me think of Playboi Carti or Lil Uzi Vert. ‘More Than Friends’ has a quirky and complex melody that has a bit of an otherworldly feeling to it. This is the kind of melody that will transport the listener to a different dimension if they are high when listening to it because its pristine and shimmering nature makes it sound futuristic and ethereal. This melody is put on a deliberate beat that really adds to the uncanny feeling of the melody. As cool as the instrumental for this track is, the thing that stands out to me is Yella Boy Musik’s vocal performance. I like how he goes with a gruff and more forceful tone on this ‘More Than Friends,’ as it contrasts the instrumental and gives the song so much texture with its tougher nature. More Than Friends’ is a trippy and interesting banger that will transport the listener to another planet if they are in a smoke session while it comes on. With these two tracks and all of his other new songs, Yella Boy Musik is proving he is one of the most talented and hardest-working artists in Milwaukee right now. He is a rapper who deserves all of the credit in the world, and I am excited to see him continue to work and grow in the future.
