If you know me or if you follow this blog at least somewhat frequently, you probably know how much I love and appreciate R&B music. I feel like this genre is absolutely thriving right now, with so many great new artists popping up all of the time and expanding the genre in interesting and fun ways. One up-and-coming R&B artist that has been on a steady rise for a while but I have always felt deserves more credit is Maya B. Maya B has been turning heads in the R&B world for years; I have been a fan of her for a very quite a while now. After releasing her first couple of singles in 2017, Maya B first popped off about a year later, when her single ‘Selenas’ went viral(this track is the one that put her on my personal radar). This song ended up being featured in the movie Promising Young Woman, helping solidify her as one to watch in the R&B world. Maya B continued the momentum she got from ‘Selenas’ by releasing a plethora of one-off singles between 2018-2020. One of these singles, 2019’s ‘Dollar To A Diamond,’ is a unique and zestful Electro-Pop-infused R&B track that is still on rotation for me frequently, as I appreciate this track so much. In 2020, Maya B released ‘Sink,’ which features fellow rising R&B star SAINt JHN(whom you may recognize from his extremely popular songs ‘Roses’ or ‘Trap’). In 2021, Maya B released her debut project, B[1]. This diverse and dynamic project proves how talented and exciting an artist Maya B can be. If you have not heard B[1] yet, go read my review on it after finishing reading this, and then listen to it for yourself. Over the last couple of years, Maya B has slowed down with her output. She only released one song in 2022, which is called ‘Bad’ and features Omeretta The Great. A couple of weeks ago, Maya B returned with a new single, ‘GOT LOVE!,’ which I wanted to highlight below. Hopefully, this is an indication that Maya B is back and going to start releasing music frequently again, as she is so talented and the world needs more of her music. As I mentioned above, Maya B has returned with her new single ‘GOT LOVE!.’ This is a bright and vibrant Pop-Trap with the kind of sound that will put anyone in a good mood when they hear it. It has a vivacious and entertaining melody that has a feeling that reminds me of a warm summer day. This song has the kind of tone that makes me want to drive by the beach with the top down and sing at the top of my lungs. This melody is provided by what sounds like a heavily distorted electric guitar with a grunge feeling to it. The way the melody is arranged makes me think of Post-Grunge bands like Social Distortion or Skate-Punk bands like Rancid. At some points in the track(especially in the post-chorus section), the melody becomes highly saturated, giving it a bit of an Industrial feeling. This melody is put on top of a hard-hitting yet easy-going Trap beat that goes very well with the mellow tone that the melody has. Maya B’s vocal performance on this song is great; it adds so much life and positive energy to the track. I really enjoy the bouncy flow that Maya B sings with on this track. At some points, her flow has a sing-songy element, making it an earworm in the best way. ‘GOT LOVE!’ is a super great comeback track for Maya B that will certainly be in my rotation very frequently for the foreseeable future, and it makes me so excited to see what she does next.
