As I like to highlight often on this blog, the Milwaukee area is absolutely brimming with talented musicians who deserve more of a spotlight. In the past, Milwaukee has often been pigeon-holed by music listeners around the country into only having one kind of music being made in the city. Up until recently, almost all of the popular artists from the city have focused on making intense and dark Drill music, so most music fans would associate the city with that sound. Over the last couple of years, though, Milwaukee’s music scene has started to flourish, and lots of artists have come to the forefront that show how diverse the music scene in this city really is. One artist that has been completely on her own path and that makes music that goes way against the norm of what Milwaukee has been previously known for is Wynter Bates. Wynter Bates is someone who has always been obsessed with making music, having studied at the prestigious music school of Columbia College Chicago. After working as a music and vocal instructor for a while, they recently decided to release zestful R&B covers on Soundcloud and start dropping their own personal music as well. They started dropping their music on Soundcloud a couple of years ago, having released a bunch of singles both on that platform and on Spotify over that time that showcase how eclectic and talented they are. In 2023, they have been prolific in their releases, as they have put out multiple covers on Soundcloud and they have also dropped a few singles, including three different versions of their latest single, ‘spinnin.’ As well as making music and releasing covers, Wynter also runs her Twilight open mic series, which is meant to highlight talented new artists in the Milwaukee area(if you are an artist in the area who would like to perform at one of these Twilight open mics, please contact Wynter on Instagram and ask her about them). With all of that being said, I wanted to briefly talk about the latest version of Wynter Bates’ song ‘spinnin,’ with this particular iteration featuring up and coming rapper Dom Francois. ‘spinnin (Remix)’ is an Alternative R&B song with a super dynamic and complex sound that stands out in the best way. This song is driven by a quirky and bright melody that is driven by distorted synths with a muffled and groovy sound. These synths are complemented by twinking synths and sound effects that make the melody feel so full and warm. This melody is put on top of an intricate beat that makes the song feel powerful and energetic. Wynter has a super interesting vocal tone that fits the sound of this instrumental perfectly. Her tone on this song is pretty deep, yet her tone is so soft; this kind of delivery is so riveting and pleasant to listen to, and it makes the song feel so all-encompassing. Dom Francois raps with a tone on this track that is gruff yet subdued; his tone creates a cool juxtaposition with the more faint nature of the instrumental and of Wynter’s delivery, but the mellow way in which he raps still goes so well with the feeling of the track. Dom Francois’ vocals on ‘spinnin (Remix)’ are pretty distorted, which also contrasts a nice contrast from the rest of the song. ‘spinnin (Remix)’ is a fresh and unique R&B track that shows how talented and individual Wynter Bates is as an artist, and it makes me very excited to see what she does next.
