Milwaukee is a city that is brimming with talented Hip Hop artists that deserve to blow up. There are so many artists that have been perfecting their craft and putting out quality music for years that are just waiting to make it big one day. One artist who has been a staple in the Milwaukee music scene for years that is worthy of way more credit and notoriety is Yella Boy Musik. Yella Boy Musik has been making music since he was a kid. Yella Boy Musik would record music with his friends on his mom’s friend’s laptop as early as 12 years old. He uploaded this music to Youtube, and you can actually find it to this day if you look for it on there. He started to get really into it back when he was in high school, as he started to get access to local studios due to his connections at a barbershop. He started taking music really seriously at 17 when one of his best friends passed away. He and his friend had always dreamed about being superstar rappers, and his friend’s passing motivated him more than ever. Yella Boy Musik’s catalog on Soundcloud goes back many years. He has multiple projects on there that are not on Spotify, and if you enjoy his music, you should look him up there. Speaking of Spotify, Yella Boy Musik has been on the grind with his releases there in 2023, as he dropped an EP called Candles & Love Handles near the beginning of the year and has put out 11 singles since then. I want to highlight three of my favorite singles he has put out this year, as these three singles highlight how diverse of an artist he is. The first track I wanted to talk about is ‘Need More,’ which came out back in April. This song features two other very talented Milwaukee rappers who deserve way more credit, Heyzeus and MAKO_RVR. This is a laid-back Melodic Trap track with a smooth and melancholy sound that makes me want to light one up with some of the homies when I hear it. I can just imagine going on a drive at night with a group of friends passing around a blunt blasting this song with the windows down. The melody has a gloomy and hazy sound that is driven by a guitar riff and complemented warm synths, and the beat has a complex yet faded sound that goes so well with the mellow feeling of the melody. All of the vocal performances on this track are great, and all three artists awesomely contrast each other. I especially love how Heyzeus’ low and gruff tone provides a buffer from the higher-pitched vocals of Yella and MAKO_RVR. Yella and MAKO both have effortless flows that add to the leisurely feeling of the song, making it so enjoyable. If you are a fan of easy-going Melodic Trap music, ‘Need More’ is a song you will love. The next track I wanted to bring up is ‘Baddie,’ which was released back at the beginning of the summer in June. This is an R&B Trap track that immediately made me think of Don Toliver when I first heard it. ‘Baddie’ has the kind of energy that makes it feel like it could be a major hit because of its Pop-Trap tendencies; it is a song that I just know would get everyone hyped up(especially the ladies) if it was played in a bar or club. This song has a bright and sunny melody that is driven by colorful synths; even though the melody is so intricate, it feels super light and is so pleasant to listen to. This melody is put over a complex Trap beat that bumps super hard and gives the song the amount of emphasis that it needs. Yella Boy Musik’s vocal performance on this song is excellent; he shows off a wide vocal range that fits the energy and sound of the melody, making the song feel so all-encompassing and warm. ‘Baddie’ is the type of song for anyone who loves the R&B Trap music that artists like Rod Wave and Toosii have made popular in the last couple of years. The last single I wanted to highlight is ‘Eat or Get Ate.’ This is Yella Boy Musik’s newest single, having come out at the beginning of August. This song is a lot more hard-hitting and intense than the last two tracks. It has the kind of sound that reminds me a lot of the gritty Trap music that Migos came up on in the mid-2010s; it has a super tough sound that provides me with so much energy when I hear it. This is the kind of song that would be perfect to listen to before(or while) working out of playing a sport; its vibrant and harsh tone will motivate anyone and get their blood pumping when it comes on. I love the dark and gloomy tone the melody of this song has; when paired with this hard-hitting and in-your-face Trap beat, it gives the song a foreboding element that is so lively and powerful. Yella Boy Musik’s vocals on this track are so bold and raucous, matching the looming energy that the song has. His vocal performance on this song is so great, as they add to the already fierce feeling of the instrumental. ‘Eat or Get Ate’ is a vigorous Trap track that should be put onto any workout playlist, because it has such a strong and commanding sound.

Yella Boy Musik is a Milwaukee Hip Hop artist who has been grinding for a long time that has the talent to make it big. He has been making waves within the Milwaukee Rap scene for a while now, and he is one of the artists from this scene that most deserves to blow up on a national scale. Through the songs I listed above and through all of his other music, it is easy to see how eclectic and diverse of a Hip Hop artist he is. It seems like there are no limits to what Yella Boy Musik can do musically; he can appeal to such a wide range of Hip hop fans because of how easily he can adapt and change his sound from song to song. Yella Boy Musik is one of the most talented Hip Hop artists in Milwaukee right now; if you are a fan of new Hip Hop you should check him out because he definitely has a lot of music you will enjoy.
